Metro is one of New Zealand's most respected magazines, known for its long-form journalism, cultural commentary, and distinctive editorial voice.
As Art Director and Designer, I was responsible for shaping the visual direction of the publication, working closely with editors, photographers, and illustrators to create engaging, thoughtful, and visually compelling stories across both print and cover design.
The Challenge:
Metro's content demanded a design approach that could elevate complex stories while maintaining clarity, consistency, and a strong editorial identity.
The challenge was balancing visual impact with readability, ensuring each issue felt distinctive while remaining recognisably Metro.
The Outcome:
Over my time with the publication, I helped develop and maintain a visually engaging editorial experience across the magazine, contributing to award-winning work recognised by both the publishing and design industries.
In 2016, this work was recognised with the Canon Media Awards Best Magazine Design Award, along with the Magazine Publishers Association Awards for Best Magazine Designer and Best Cover (Current Affairs & Business).
