The Wellington Boys' and Girls' Institute (BGI) has supported young people in Wellington for generations, adapting its programmes and services to meet the changing needs of the community.
For the organisation's annual report, the goal was to create something that would do more than communicate information. It needed to celebrate the impact of BGI's work while remaining memorable long after it had been received.
The Challenge:
Annual reports are often read once and forgotten.
The challenge was creating a piece that stakeholders would want to keep—something capable of communicating the organisation's impact while strengthening its presence in the minds of supporters, partners, and funders.
The design also needed to honour the values and cultural significance at the heart of BGI, including the poutokomanawa—the central post that represents the heart and spirit of the organisation.
The Approach:
Rather than producing a conventional report, we reimagined the publication as a large-format poster designed to be displayed rather than discarded.
An A2 format provided the scale and presence of a poster while still folding down into a practical handheld document. Three colour variations were developed to represent BGI's core values, creating a system that felt both distinctive and meaningful.
The visual direction drew inspiration from the poutokomanawa, placing BGI's purpose and community impact at the centre of the design.
The Outcome:
The result was an annual report that functioned as both a communication piece and a lasting reminder of BGI's work.
By creating something people wanted to keep, display, and revisit, the project helped extend the life of the report while reinforcing BGI's role as an important force within the Wellington community.
